Samantha was accepted to attend Cal Poly in the Fall 09

Since Samantha began at CIR, she has always been a self-motivated student. Each year, she has earned straight A's in each semester at Richmond High School. More recently, she is excelling in AP courses that she has taken as a senior. She has been accepted to attend Cal Poly for the fall of 09. Her goal is to become an engineer and one day come back and work on projects in her local community. According to Samantha, "I have always been motivated when it comes to my studies because I am hoping that having an education can show me what else is out there other than what I see in Richmond". She also wants to be a positive example to other students in Richmond. Her message being that, if you work hard and stay motivated, good things will happen. We also want to wish Samanthat the best!!!!!

Miriam Orozco was accepted to attend Dominican University

Miriam, a CIR senior, received word that she was accepted to attend Dominican University and UC Santa Cruz in the Fall 09. Before she decides where to attend, she is waiting to hear back from UC Berkeley and UC Davis. She is a great student that is interested in majoring in the medical field to one day become a doctor. We want to wish Miriam the best of luck once she decides where to attend.

CIR Mentor Program

Every student in the College is Real Program is paired up with a mentor. The mentors are people who can talk to the student about college and any other topic that may arise. Also, the mentors are there to provide encouragement, motivation, and assistance with any current school assignments.

This school year, CIR will be welcoming a number of new mentors. Since we just admitted about 10-12 students to the program, each one of our new mentors will be paired up with one of our new student(s). Here in this pic, we have Lisa and her daughters posing with her new mentess Zenaida and Teresa. We are very happy to have each one of our mentors on board. Thank you!!!

Here are our 2008-2009 CIR juniors. We just finsished completing the SAT pre-test and will begin the SAT preparation on Tuesday. Wish us luck!!!!

CIR Tutoring

College is Real provides tutoring two days a week to the students in the program. Now that the soccer season is over, we have seen tutoring attendance levels increase to the level they were at the beggining of the school year. Time to do some homework!!

New CIR Members

Every year, College is Real recruits members from both the girls and boys Richmond High School Soccer Teams to partcipate in the program. In order to be in the program, students must have at least a 2.7 GPA and demonstrate that they are "college potential" students. In addition, they meet with the program director to evaluate their potential in the CIR Program.
This year we added 12 new students from both the 9th and 10th grades.

SAT Preparation for CIR Juniors

College is Real has started the SAT preparation with all of our juniors. Here, each CIR junior is required to take a pre-SAT test to determine where their strenghts and weaknesses are. Once they are determined, they will all attend SAT prep classes two days a week for two hours each time for a total of 10 weeks. Good luck to all of our juniors!!

Welcome everyone. Today is College is Real's very first post! In this blog we hope to post events, activities and meetings that College is Real has. We want to share the wonderful stories that our students have. The CIR program was started in 2006 and since then has made great progress towards having the students in the program believe that they will one day attend college.

Most students in the CIR program will be the first to attend college.
